A day in Bologna, Italy

I didn’t quite know what to expect from Bologna having read so many mixed reviews about the city. But, I am SO happy I decided to go. It really blew me away with its charm and uniqueness. So, if you have an extra day to spare in northern Italy, it might just be worth the visit.

My Bologna Day-Trip Itinerary:

Montagnola Park: Situated right by the bus station, this public park features a breathtaking staircase built in the 19th century.

Ventana al Canal: This is a secret window that opens up to one of Bologna’s gorgeous canals. It’s like a small piece of Venice right there in the city!

Pappare: A hipster brunch spot that mixes traditional with modern. Please try the charcoal brioche with hazelnut and raspberry marmalade!

Le Due Torri (the two towers): Landmarks of the city, these two medieval towers are a must-see. You can even climb the Asinelli Tower, which gives you a sweeping view of Bologna. But, more on that later.

Piazza Maggiore: This is the main piazza of the city that you will most-likely find bustling with people and street performers, especially if you arrive on the weekend.

Basilica de San Pietro: The official cathedral of Bologna, dedicated to Saint Peter, is definitely worth the look. Entrance is free and it is located in Piazza Maggiore.

Fountain of Neptune: Built in the 16th century, this fountain rests in Piazza del Nettuno, right next to Piazza Maggiore.

Margherita Park: A gorgeous public park with lots of trees, fields, a lake, plus a walking path and play areas for kids. It’s definitely worth the walk from the city center.

Tip: Look out for Bologna’s nearly 40-km-long  porticoes as you make your way to the park. Walk underneath the

portico of San Luca to really get a taste for the unique architecture here in the city.

Piazza Santo Stefano: A charming triangular piazza tat holds the Basilica of Santo Stefano.

Tigellino: Choose from an array of tiny bit-sized sandwiches to sample Bologna’s famous meats and cheeses.

Asinelli Tower: One of the Two Tours, make sure you leave time in your day to schedule a climb to the top!

Tip: If you haven’t pre-purchased your ticket online, no worries! When you arrive in Piazza Maggiore, you can secure your spot at the Bologna Welcome center.
